DAY 1. ARRIVE SYDNEY (L,D)
Our flights arrive in Sydney where we transfer to Vaucluse House one of Sydney’s few 19th century mansions still surrounded by its original gardens and wooded grounds. After lunch we take a guided tour learning about the social drama of colonial Sydney whilst exploring the estate including the kitchen garden, waterfall and harbour beach with its fantastic views. En-route to our hotel we take an orientation tour of Sydney seeing the famous Opera House and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. 2 Night Stay: Park Royal, Darling Harbour
DAY 2. Saturday – SYDNEY & SURROUNDS (B,L,D)
This morning we encounter an authentic outback experience at Tobruk Sheep Station. Set on a high plateau above the Hawkesbury River, Tobruk is surrounded by state forests and bushland with amazing views to the Blue Mountains. Tonight we enjoy a dinner cruise on iconic Sydney Harbour. Admire the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as we cruise the main harbour before disembarking at Darling Harbour.
DAY 3. SYDNEY TOURING, BOARD INDIAN PACIFIC (B,L,D)
Take time for retail therapy at Harbourside in Darling Harbour before visiting the Justice and Police Museum. This historic complex of two courts and one police station is dedicated to telling the story of policing, crime and courts in New South Wales. Our guided tour takes a look at the 19th century water police station and what it took to maintain law and order on Sydney’s waterfront in days gone by. After lunch we transfer to the station to board the mighty Indian Pacific, checking-in to our Gold Service Cabins. As we head west we discover the picturesque region of Mount Victoria and the Blue Mountains known for its rugged landscape and dramatic scenery. 1 Night Stay: Indian Pacific in Gold Service
DAY 4. BROKEN HILL, ARRIVE ADELAIDE & BAROSSA VALLEY (B,L,D)
This morning the train makes a stop in Broken Hill, the classic outback town known as ‘The Silver City’. Here we have the opportunity to visit the Pro Hart Gallery, Broken Earth Complex or Miners Memorial. Back onboard there’s time to enjoy the old-world charm of rail travel and watch as the rough outback mallee scrub dissolves into lush green pastures as we continue on to Adelaide. On arrival we leave the city and travel into the acclaimed wine region of the Barossa Valley. 1 Night Stay: Novotel Barossa Valley Resort
DAY 5. BAROSSA VALLEY, BOARD PS MURRAY PRINCESS (B,L,D)
We start our day at the majestic Chateau Tanunda, the largest and oldest chateau in Australia where we take a tour of this beautiful estate, its vineyards, winemaking area and barrel hall before sampling some of the wines. Our next stop is the Maggie Beer Farm Shop where there’s time to sample Maggie’s signature products before sitting down to dine at The Eatery. Our afternoon takes us to Mengler’s Hill lookout, the famous Herbig Family Tree, and the intriguing Whispering Wall at the Barossa Reservoir. Later we depart on the PS Murray Princess from historic Mannum, birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication. Tonight as we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Caurnamont, there’s a chance to spot nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank.
DAY 6. MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
Why not wake early today to catch the prolific birdlife at daybreak including pelicans, wrens and swans. This morning we take a wildlife tour on a discovery vessel; travelling in small, personalised groups, we explore the maze of the river. The birdlife is amazing, watch for darters, herons and egrets feeding along the river’s muddy edges. On-board take part in a game of bocce or compete in the fishing challenge before we cruise upriver past Walker Flat to Sugar Shack Conservation Park. After dinner, enjoy being entertained by the talented crew.
DAY 7. MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
Continuing upriver this morning we enjoy breakfast and pass through one of 13 locks which maintain the flow and levels of water. Take advantage of a relaxing day and the on-board activities as we make our way to Morgan. Get your thinking caps on tonight as after dinner it’s quiz night!
DAY 8. MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
From Morgan we transfer by coach to the Riverland town of Waikerie for some free time. We then continue on to Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre near Kingston On Murray. Here we sample some of the wines at the cellar door, take in lunch and enjoy a presentation about the wetlands. There’s also time to stroll around the gardens and orchards before we return to Morgan, re-board and continue our journey upriver to secure at the 329km mark of the Murray River.
DAY 9. MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
This morning we arrive at the picturesque Caudo Vineyard located at Hogwash Bend for a taste of the local drop and a chance to explore the gardens. Back on- board we cruise downriver back towards Morgan where we take a guided walk of the township and the Morgan Living History Museum. Departing late afternoon we secure at Donald Flat Lagoon for our overnight moorage. After dinner, take in the fun and excitement of the PS Murray Princess ‘Murray River Cup’.
DAY 10. MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
After breakfast we cruise to Swan Reach to join a guided walking tour visiting the Swan Reach Museum. Cruising downriver this afternoon take in the tranquillity as the landscape slides by or listen to the First Officer’s talk in the Sturt Dining Room. At Sunnydale, it’s all ashore for the Woolshed Show which recreates typical Australian woolshed history. Next we visit the Native Wildlife Shelter where some of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. Tonight we enjoy a great Aussie barbecue, cooked and served in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River.
DAY 11. MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
Cruising past magnificent cliffs scoured by the river over millions of years we reach Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites. Stepping back in time we take a guided boardwalk tour to view ancient rock carvings and to learn about aboriginal history in this area. We return to the vessel to cruise downriver to Younghusband. Tonight the captain and his officers host a spectacular Farewell Captain’s Buffet Dinner – it’s time to dress up and dance!
DAY 12. END OF CRUISE, FLIGHTS HOME (B)
Our final day sees us leave Younghusband to return to Mannum to farewell the Murray River and transfer to Adelaide Airport for our flights home.
