Overview

From the comfort of your seat or sleeper you’ll wonder at the ever changing landscape, as the Spirit of the Outback ventures into the very heart of the Queensland outback. On its journey West, the Spirit of the Outback passes through the heritage towns of Blackwater, Emerald, Barcaldine before arriving in Longreach, home to the famous Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. The outback dining experience is a discovery in itself, with hearty Aussie meals and relaxing drinks shared onboard with other passengers. Once in Longreach you can join the Town Tour that includes visits to the Outback Heritage Centre, RM Williams Cottage, the famous Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Museum. You may even choose to indulge in a sunset cruise on the Thomson River. Peak season is May to October and early bookings are essential.

First Class Single sleeping berth

Consist of single bed for one customer, or one adult sharing with a child under four years. Each cabin contains a wardrobe, power point (240 volt AC) and a washbasin with vanity mirror. The berth has a reading light, pillow, top and bottom sheet, blanket and towel. Half of the single sleeping berths face in the direction of travel and the other half in reverse. First Class fares includes all onboard meals

First Class Twin sleeping berths

Consists of two bunk style beds. Each bed can be sold individually to customers of the same gender, or as an entire cabin to a couple or small family group. Each cabin contains a table, two wardrobes, full length mirror, power point (240 volt AC) and a washbasin with vanity mirror. The berths have a reading light, pillow, top and bottom sheet, blanket and towel. All twin sleeping berths face in the direction of travel. First Class fares includes all onboard meals

Economy Class seat

All Economy Class seating carriages are open style saloon cars with overhead luggage racks and individual reading lights. The comfortable seats may be reclined to the desired position by pressing a button in the arm rest. A fold down table foot rest is provided, however pillows and blankets are not provided. All economy class seating faces the direction of travel.

Facilities and services

Food and beverages
The Tuckerbox Restaurant allows you to dine in for an authentic Aussie dining experience. Alternatively, select from hot and cold takeaway snacks, drinks and confectionery in the Captain Starlight Lounge. Stay and enjoy the friendly atmosphere or take back to your seat. A limited liquor service is available for consumption in the Captain Starlight Lounge and the Stockman’s Bar. Please advise us of any dietary requirements you may have at least four days prior to departure. All special meal requests must be pre-paid.
Showers
Showers are located at the end of all sleeping cars.
Toilets
Toilets are located at the end of all sleeping and sitting cars.
Drinking fountains
Drinking fountains are located at the leading end of most cars.
Disability access
Spirit of the Outback has limited provisions for customers with disabilities. Please advise your Travel Consultant if you have any special needs or require assistance from our onboard staff.
Motorail
Allows customers to travel by rail and still have the convenience of using their own car at their destination. Explore the many tourist attractions and the Queensland’s unique, diverse landscape. Conditions apply.

Travel advice

Smoking
Smoking is not permitted on any Queensland Rail Travel service, at station platforms or with four metres of any building or entrance.
Luggage
Customers may check in two items of luggage not exceeding 20kg (44 pounds), plus one item of carry on hand luggage free of charge. Where check-in facilities are available, luggage must be presented at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. Liability for loss or damage is limited to $200. Unchecked luggage is carried at owner’s risk.
Break of journey
Sector fares apply when a break in journey exceeds four hours.
Unaccompanied children
The minimum age for unaccompanied children onboard all Queensland Rail Travel services is 12 years old. Conditions apply.
Bookings
Bookings are accepted up to 325 days in advance, with exception of bookings for journeys between Brisbane and Gympie which are only accepted on the day of travel. Please note that the Spirit of the Outback will not set down customers between Brisbane and Cooroy on its northbound journey.
Cancellation policy
If travel is unable to be undertaken after the tickets have been issued, cancellation or rebooking fees apply. It is imperative that unwanted reservations be cancelled as early as possible.
