DAY 1. Friday – ARRIVE ADELAIDE, BOARD PS MURRAY PRINCESS (L,D)
Our flights arrive in Adelaide where we transfer to historic Mannum on the mighty Murray River. We enjoy lunch and some time to discover this town known as the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication. Mid-afternoon we board the PS Murray Princess and set sail downriver. This evening we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Mundurra. Keep an eye out for nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank, watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets and many other species. Later, the on-board entertainer provides music for the night owls. 3 Night Stay: PS Murray Princess
DAY 2. Saturday – MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
In 1879 the first bridge to span the Murray River was built at Edwards Crossing, which quickly became the bustling township of Murray Bridge. After a hearty breakfast, we join a guided tour of the town’s historic landmarks and local attractions before reboarding in time for lunch as we continue to cruise upriver. This afternoon, as we moor at Salt Bush Flat we have the opportunity to inspect the wheelhouse with the Captain. After dinner, enjoy being entertained by the talented on-board crew.
DAY 3. Sunday – MURRAY RIVER CRUISE (B,L,D)
This morning we take to the shore for a guided nature walk unearthing secrets of the local flora and fauna. Next, the PS Murray Princess departs for the big river gorges and 90 metre cliffs of the upper river. Just after Fromms Landing, we turn and head downriver to River View Lodge near Piggy Flat where our discovery vessel awaits for a wildlife tour. Travelling in small, personalised groups, we explore the maze of the river and it’s amazing birdlife – watch for darters, herons and egrets feeding along the river’s muddy edges. This evening we join the captain and officers for pre-dinner drinks and the Captain’s dinner and dance.
DAY 4. Monday – BAROSSA VALLEY, GLENELG (B,L,D)
Returning to Mannum after breakfast, we say farewell to the grand lady of the Murray and board our awaiting coach. Travelling into the Barossa Valley, our first stop today is the “whispering wall” at the Barossa Reservoir where we experience the unusual acoustic phenomenon of sound travelling from one side to the other over 140 metres. Next we discover Barossa Sculpture Park at Mengler’s Hill with spectacular views over the Barossa Valley. At the grand Barossa Chateau we enjoy lunch then a tour of the grounds and antique shop before continuing on to Glenelg. 1 Night Stay: Grand Chancellor Hotel, Adelaide
DAY 5. Tuesday – BOARD INDIAN PACIFIC (B,L,D)
This morning we board the mighty Indian Pacific checking-in to our ‘Gold Service’ cabins. As we head east we watch as lush green pastures dissolve into tough mallee scrub on approach to Broken Hill. Early evening we arrive in this classic outback town known as ‘The Silver City’. Here we have the opportunity to visit the Pro Hart Gallery, the Broken Earth complex or the Miners Memorial. Re-board in time for dinner and continue through the night towards Sydney. 1 Night Stay: Indian Pacific in ‘Gold Service’.
DAY 6. Wednesday – ARRIVE SYDNEY (B,L,D)
We awake to views of the Blue Mountains then disembark at Mount Victoria to discover this picturesque region, known for its rugged landscape and dramatic scenery. We then make the final leg of our journey to Sydney Central by the regional passenger service. On arrival we take an orientation tour of Sydney including the famous Opera House, Mrs Macquarie’ Chair and the Town Hall. 3 Night Stay: Park Royal, Darling Harbour
DAY 7. Thursday – RIVERBOAT POSTMAN CRUISE, FREE AFTERNOON (B,L,D)
Today we join the Riverboat Postman, established in 1910, as it delivers mail and other essentials to the river-access-only settlements on the Lower Hawkesbury River. All the skippers are locals who have lived in the area their whole lives. Enjoy lunch on board and be entertained by the stories of the river whilst cruising in comfort up this spectacular waterway. On returning to Sydney the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure; perhaps visit one of the many attractions that are within walking distance of the hotel. GGP
DAY 8. Friday – TOOBRUK SHEEP STATION, SYDNEY HARBOUR DINNER CRUISE (B,L,D)
This morning we encounter an authentic outback experience at Tobruk Sheep Station. Set on over 150 acres on a high plateau above the Hawkesbury River, Tobruk is surrounded by state forests and bushland, with amazing views to the Blue Mountains. You will feel 1,000 miles from anywhere but in reality you’re only 70 minutes from Sydney. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner cruise on iconic Sydney Harbour. Admire the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as we cruise the main harbour before disembarking at Darling Harbour. GGP
DAY 9. Saturday – DARLING HARBOUR, HYDE PARK BARRACKS, FLIGHTS HOME (B,L)
Take some time for retail therapy at harbourside Darling Harbour before visiting Hyde Park Barracks. bbuilt in 1819 by convict labour, it is one of Sydney’s most elegant historic buildings, once housing over 1500 male convict men and boys. Enjoy a farewell lunch at the Barracks Restaurant with its stunning views over Sydney before being transferred to the airport for our flights home.
