itinerary

Day 1. Board Spirit of Queensland in Brisbane

Depart for your overnight journey on the Spirit of Queensland train in either RailBeds with all meals included plus pamper pack with the evening bed turn down, or Premium Economy seats. The train is scheduled to depart Roma Street, Brisbane at 3.45pm. (All meals on the train for RailBed passengers).

Day 2. Arrive Cairns

Wake for breakfast on the Spirit of Queensland. The train will pass through Townsville and then make its way along the picturesque Cassowary Coast, arriving in Cairns mid afternoon. You will then be met by our friendly tour host and transferred to the Cairns Queenslander, which is located close to the city. You will have time to freshen up before enjoying dinner this evening at the hotel. 5 nights Cairns Queenslander. (All meals on the train included for RailBed passengers). (D) Passengers not travelling by train will need to make their own way to the hotel and meet the group for dinner.

Day 3. Herberton Historic Village

Departing Cairns this morning by coach, we visit the Herberton Historical Village. The Historic Village is an outdoor museum presenting the story of Australia’s pioneering past and has over 50 restored original buildings. Walking through the Village, visitors are given a sense of being in a Historical Township complete with chemist, school, bank, grocer’s store, a jail, mechanic and more, making this museum the most significant in Queensland. Following a wonderful day, we make our way back to Cairns with time to freshen up before dinner. (B,D)

Day 4. Mossman Gorge, Daintree River Cruise, Port Douglas

Today we adventure into the Mossman Gorge. The Gorge has a very accessible and scenic section of the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park. Here the Mossman River tumbles its way over and around huge granite boulders that line the gorge creating cool clear freshwater swimming holes. We then make our way to the Daintree River for a River Cruise spotting crocs and other wildlife. Then into Port Douglas with time to explore the town before returning to Cairns via Palm Cove. Day 5. Chillagoe Caves

Spectacular limestone caverns, passages and stalactites comprise of what is known as the Chillagoe Caves, a 400-million-year old cave system located a few hours west of Cairns in the Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park. We enjoy a guided tour of the caves including The Royal Arch Cave, one of the bigger caving systems in the area. The walk contains shafts of light that reveal ancient cave formations. Hand held lamps are provided, and visitors are required to stoop in a couple of sections. Then we tour Donna Cave. This cave features a beautiful formation in the shape of the Madonna. This is a 200 metre walk, steps included, where visitors are taken through electrically illuminated sections of the cave. For the more adventures, The Trezkinn Cave is 150 metres long and reveals a striking formation called ‘the chandelier”. The cave’s entrance also has stunning views of the Chillagoe landscape. Day 6. Botanic Gardens & Cairns Aquarium

After breakfast we make our way to the Cairns Botanic Gardens for a tour. The gardens are the best example in Australia of tropical flora. The extensive selection of tropical flora includes some rare plants seldom found elsewhere in the world. Lunch is at the famous Dundees Restaurant followed by a visit to the Cairns Aquarium. As the only aquarium in the world dedicated exclusively to the habitats and species of Tropical North Queensland, with over 16,000 animals and unique opportunities to move up close to some of the world’s most fascinating, elusive or deadly creatures.Then enjoy our farewell dinner tonight. Day 7. Depart Cairns on Spirit of Queensland

After breakfast this morning we will depart to meet the Spirit of Queensland for your journey home from our tropical Cairns getaway. Note: If not using the train service, please check out by 10am and enjoy the rest of your holiday. Extra Nights accommodation can be arranged upon request. (B)

Day 8. Arrive Brisbane

Today you will arrive at your home station after enjoying a charming rail journey from North Queensland with your new found friends. The train is scheduled to arrive into Brisbane at 9.20am. (B)
