Returning to Mitchell Grass Retreat, gather at The Tin Shed, the retreat’s bespoke dining venue, for a relaxed two-course barbecue dinner. Later, beneath a canopy of stars, gather around the fire pit to toast marshmallows as Texas Longhorns quietly graze in the paddocks beyond. 2 nights Mitchell Grass Retreat
Day 2: Sunday – Longreach (B,L,D)
Begin your day with a relaxed champagne breakfast at the Tin Shed.

Travel the short distance to nearby Ilfracombe and the historic Wellshot Hotel. Established in the 1880s, this iconic watering hole was famously relocated from Barcaldine by rail in 1890. Snap a selfie on the quirky bar stools at the one-of-a-kind wool press bar, then enjoy an outback pub lunch amid eclectic memorabilia.
Relax and refresh at Mitchell Grass Retreat before boarding the heritage railmotor at Longreach Railway Station. Toast the sunset with a glass of champagne as the train winds through open plains towards Smithy’s Crossing, then transfer to Smithy’s Camp for the fabulous Opera Ball.
Festoon lighting beneath the stars sets the scene as some of Australia’s finest singers perform a series of opera favourites while you enjoy a three-course camp-oven dinner. The evening rounds out in true bush style with billy tea and damper. When the music shifts, the dancefloor comes alive with an upbeat DJ set, the bar stays open, and you’re invited to dance the night away beside the Thomson River.
