Day 1. Depart Brisbane to Roma (MT,L,D)
Departing on our luxury ‘Gold Class’ coach from Brisbane Transit Centre on Roma Street, we enjoy the beautiful countryside scenery as we travel through the fertile Lockyer Valley to Picnic Point in Toowoomba. From here our journey takes us through Dalby to Chinchilla for lunch, finishing our day at Roma to bed down for an overnight stay. 1 Night Stay: Explorers Inn, Roma
Day 2. Roma to Charleville (B,L,D)
This morning we visit Roma Cattle Saleyards, the largest cattle selling facility in the southern hemisphere, selling over 400,000 cattle a year. Join a local cattle farmer on the raised walkway around the yards, providing us with an excellent vantage point over the proceedings. Leaving Roma, we continue to Mitchell to visit Bonus Downs. Here we take a homestead and Jackaroo’s cottage tour as well as learning all about the rare Ooline Forest. Discover the many plant species and observe wildlife whilst listening to our guides talk about the historic background of the vulnerable tree species and their ongoing vision on preserving this forest. We arrive in Charleville mid-afternoon with free time to settle in until dinner. Tonight, we visit the Cosmos Centre & Observatory to unlock the secrets of the stars. 2 Night Stay: Mulga Country Motor Inn, Charleville
Day 3. Charleville (B,L,D)
Today we explore Charleville, stopping off at the Vortex Rainmaking Guns before continuing to Charleville Airport where our guide will explain the fascinating history of the top-secret USA Airbase. Enjoy a guided tour and lunch at the historic Corones Hotel before a special encounter with Australia’s endangered Bilby – learn about the captive breeding program that is carried out in Charleville to ensure the survival of this intriguing species.
Day 4. Charleville to Bourke (B,MT,L,D)
An early start today, as we farewell Charleville making our way to Cunnamulla taking time to visit the Cunnamulla Fella Centre, Art Gallery and Museum. Our afternoon takes us to the township of Bourke, where we visit the Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre showcasing interactive stories of the inland sea, the wool story, riverboats and much more. Discover more about the life of Henry Lawson ‘Outback’ and marvel at the stories of our women of the west. After an educational afternoon, we make our way to our accommodation in Bourke. 2 Night Stay: Riverside Motel, Bourke
Day 5. Bourke (B,MT,L,D)
This morning we enjoy a town tour with a local guide offering an in-depth insight into the history of Bourke, its isolation, the people who live here and the region’s current status. After lunch we board the PV Jandra paddleboat for a leisurely cruise along the Darling River. **Please note: The running of the PV Jandra is seasonal and subject to weather. An outback show will be offered as a substitute if the PV Jandra is not running.
Day 6. Bourke to Lightning Ridge (B,L,D)
This morning we travel through the town of Brewarrina on the banks of the Barwon River before arriving at Walgett, the regional hub for wool, wheat and cotton. After lunch here, we head north to the Black Opal capital of the world – Lightning Ridge. Enjoy a free afternoon before dinner this evening. 2 Night Stay: Wallangulla Motel, Lightning Ridge. Please note: Accommodation in this country region is very limited and basic. Rooms are en-suited. Star ratings of room types vary. Rooms are allocated at discretion of the motel staff.
Day 7. Lightning Ridge (B,MT,L,D)
With our local guide we travel out to the opal fields and discover the many hidden gems of this fascinating town. We visit Fred Bodel’s hut, the oldest miner’s camp in the area. The historical Three Mile Flat, the site of the early mining settlement. From here we visit Lunatic Hill Open Cut mine, being the largest open cut opal mine in NSW. Simms Hill opal field and view the hand-built stone castle – Amigo’s Castle and Bevans cactus gardens. After lunch we visit Chambers of the Black Hand, a national treasure in the making in a 100-year-old mine shaft. You will see images carved and painted in the sandstone walls and pillars.
Day 8. Lightning Ridge to Armidale (B,MT,L,D)
Leaving Lightning Ridge and its colourful characters behind us, we travel through Burren Junction and on to Wee Waa, the oldest established town in the district and the birthplace of the commercial cotton industry in Australia. Our afternoon takes us through Narrabri and on to Gunnedah, a town claiming to be the ‘koala capital of the world’. Here we break for lunch then continue east to Tamworth, stopping at the Big Golden Guitar before heading up the Moonbi Range and bedding down for the night at Armidale. 1 Night Stay: Cotswold Gardens, Armidale
Day 9. Armidale to Ballina (B,L,D)
Leaving the tablelands, we head east along Waterfall Way through Dorrigo and on to Bellingen. Here we have time to wonder the historic town with its compliment of heritage listed buildings, reflecting the early logging days. After lunch at the ‘Old Butter Factory’ we continue north through Coffs Harbour and on to New Italy for an afternoon break before finishing our day at Ballina. 1 Night Stay: Quality Hotel, Ballina
Day 10. Ballina to Brisbane (B,MT,L)
After a leisurely start to our last day, we board the coach and travel to Brunswick Heads. Here we cruise the Brunswick River and experience the natural beauty and biodiversity of World Heritage listed rainforests and national parks, along with the abundance of birdlife. After our experience with the natural beauty of the region, we make our way to lunch. After lunch we board the coach and head north through the Tweed Valley into Queensland on our way to Brisbane Transit Centre.
