Day 1 (Sat) – DARWIN
This afternoon, make your own way to Darwin, and check in to your hotel DoubleTree by Hilton Esplanade for the next two nights.
Day 2 (Sun) – DARWIN
This morning is at your leisure. Relax by the pool or take a stroll along The Esplanade. This afternoon join your city sights tour for the perfect introduction to Darwin, with expert commentary by a local guide. See the lush Botanic Gardens and the Chinese Temple, which was re-built after it was totally demolished by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Tour the historic sites of the city including the East Point Military Precinct. See the Stokes Hill Wharf area, the Mooring Basin and Darwin Aviation Museum. There is also time available to explore the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, whose collections encompass Aboriginal art, visual arts, and Northern Territory history and natural sciences. Day 3 (Mon) – DARWIN TO KAKADU
Join your two day tour of Kakadu National Park. Travel along the Arnhem Highway, their major river systems and wetlands, into Kakadu National Park. Located 257 kilometres east of Darwin, this national park covers 20,000 square kilometres of landscape from rocky escarpment home to historic Aboriginal rock art dating back thousands of years, to floodplains abundant with wildlife. Visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre to view the informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu. Join your local guide on a cruise of Yellow Water Billabong. Search for saltwater crocodiles and the colourful range of birdlife for which this region is renowned. After lunch, stop at Nourlangie, where your guide will lead you on a walk to view the rock art galleries. (B,L)
Day 4 (Tue) – KAKADU TO DARWIN
This morning explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr, where you’ll climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries to the lookout for a view over the surrounding wetlands. Join the Guluyambi Cruise on the East Alligator River. An Aboriginal guide will provide an insight into their culture, including local mythology, the river’s abundant food chain, as well as bush survival skills. With special permission of the local people, you are able to go ashore in Arnhem Land. Visit the Bowali Visitor Centre before returning to Darwin and your overnight accommodation, DoubleTree by Hilton Esplanade. (L)
Day 5 (Wed) – THE GHAN, DARWIN AND KATHERINE
Transer from the city centre to the Darwin Rail Terminal, where your journey on board The Ghan begins. Enjoy a light lunch in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant, before arriving in Katherine. Enjoy an Off Train Excursion to Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, one of the highlights of your journey, before continuing south to Alice Springs. (B,L,D)
Day 6 (Thur) – THE GHAN, ALICE SPRINGS
Shortly after breakfast, The Ghan will arrive in Alice Springs providing you with an opportunity to participate in an Off Train Excursion. Take in the delights of this outback town, surrounded by the beautiful MacDonnell Ranges, before rejoining The Ghan. Later this evening you have the opportunity to disembark at Manguri for an experience under the stars. (B,L,D)
Day 7 (Fri) – THE GHAN, ADELAIDE
Spend the morning sharing stories with new found friends in the Outback Explorer Lounge, dine in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant as the Flinders Ranges roll by or simply head back to the privacy of your cabin to wind down and plan your next epic journey. Arrive into Adelaide mid morning, where your journey concludes. (B)
