DAY 3 – Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island’s relaxed tropical lifestyle, quiet, secluded beaches, rugged nature and abundant wildlife make it a wonderful place to visit. Magnetic Island sits within the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, but the landscape here is different to the usual tropical rainforest found on many of the Great Barrier Reef islands. We enjoy a lunch at Horseshoe Bay before returning to the mainland for dinner this evening. Overnight Madison Plaza, Townsville (B,L,D)

DAY 4 – Museum of Tropical Queensland, Reef HQ

Today we visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland and enjoy a guided tour of the many exhibits. The star attraction is the HMS Pandora Gallery. Sent to catch the famous Bounty and her mutinous crew, the Pandora sank off the coast of Cape York in 1791. Hundreds of amazing artefacts have been recovered from the wreck and are on display. Following lunch, we will then make our way across the road to Reef HQ. Home of the largest living coral reef where you can experience the reef up close and personal without getting your feet wet. We then visit Queens Gardens to wander through the lush tropical plants. Overnight Madison Plaza, Townsville (B,L,D)

DAY 5 – Charters Towers, Ghosts of Gold Show

Driving through the streets of Charters Towers is like viewing a living montage of Australian history and heritage. When gold was first discovered in Charters Towers in 1871, it became a gold rush town and quickly grew to become the second largest town in Queensland. Today, the magnificent heritage buildings are testament to the prosperity of years past. Our tour of Charters Towers includes a visit to the Miners Cottage which houses a collection of goldfields memorabilia. We will also visit the Zara Clarke National Trust Museum which houses a large collection of photographs, equipment and other memorabilia that reflects Charters Towers’ golden and military past. This evening we embark on the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Movie where the ghosts of the gold rush era tell their tales as the evening settles in. Overnight Park Motel, Charters Towers (B,L,D)
