DAY 1. Saturday – Depart Brisbane on Spirit of the Outback (D)
Arrive at Platform 10, Roma Street Station Brisbane at 1pm to meet your tour hostess and check-in to your First Class Cabin. At 1.55pm we depart on the Spirit of the Outback for a realistic, up-front view of Queensland’s captivating outback – enjoyed in the comfort of air-conditioned, authentically-themed surrounds. On our journey west we venture through the heritage towns of the Central West. Dining onboard ‘The Spirit of the Outback’ is an experience in itself with the themed restaurant car serving hearty Aussie meals. While the Shearers Rest First Class lounge car is ideal for a quiet drink, taking time to get to know your fellow travel companions. Overnight Stay: First Class Cabin ‘Spirit of the Outback’.
DAY 2. Sunday – Arrive Longreach (B,L,D)
Relax today and let the Outback come to life in front of your eyes as we wind our way through ever changing scenery and rugged terrain. This epic rail journey arrives into Longreach the heart of the Queensland Outback, mid-afternoon. Here we board our ‘Diamond Class’ or ‘Gold Class’ coach for transfers to our hotel. 4 Night Stay: Albert Park Motor Inn, Longreach
DAY 3. Monday – Longreach Touring (B,L,D)
This morning discover the QANTAS Founders Museum and uncover national treasures such as the historic 1922 Qantas hangar, historic Qantas Founders Museum photographs, memorabilia and multi-media displays that bring alive the inspirational stories of one of the world’s pioneering airlines. We then take a 1.5 hour tour of the 747 and 707 jets. a 1.5 hour tour of the 747 and 707 jets. From here we take a short journey to Ilfracombe to visit the famous Wellshot Hotel, one of the most unique outback pubs, over one hundred years old and well worth looking through, with its woolpress bar, remarkable collection of hats, and wealth of local memorabilia. Enjoy country hospitality at its best over lunch and a few ales, then join the publican and staff for some unique visitor rituals. Tonight we head out to Camden Park Station (visited by the Queen in 1970), to learn about life on the land of the Walker’s 5th generation family business. Relax and watch and outback sunset by the artesian bore, followed by dinner and dessert under the stars – just magic!
DAY 4. Tuesday – Longreach Touring (B,L,D)
This morning be inspired by the Australian outback and the stories of the people who shaped our nation. Many are given tribute when we visit the famous Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame where bush history slides up close to you with tales of bushrangers, shearers, stockmen and drovers. shearers, stockmen and drovers. The highlight of our visit here is the Outback Stockman’s Show which represents the quintessential Australian character. Join an experienced head stockman for an informative insight and tribute to the skills of all stockmen past and present. Horse ‘Kenny’ and ‘Olly’ the Steer are but a small part of this exciting new show of horsemanship and the showcasing of traditional Australian Stockman skills that are still used today. Next, we’ll visit historic Rosebank Station originally settled as a sheep and cattle station some 100 years ago. Hear local pastoral heritage stories and enjoy lunch in the original homestead before returning to our motel to rest up for tonight where we will be aboard the Longreach Explorer. Relax on the top deck with 360 degree views of the majestic Thomson River and listen to the captain’s commentary with stories about the river, its wildlife and indigenous links. We stop at Sunset Bend to toast the sunset and take in the stunning colours of the outback sky. As the colours fade into starlight, we dock at Smithy’s Outback dinner and live show. Settle back and enjoy an evening to remember, dining under the stars beside the Coolibah lined river. Enjoy a two-course table service dinner, featuring camp oven themed cuisine, whilst live on-stage quality guest performers will entertain us with their songs and stories. GGP
DAY 5. Wednesday – Winton (B,L,D)
Departing for Winton we visit the Age of Dinosaurs Exhibit, the world’s largest collection of unique Australian dinosaur fossils and the most productive fossil preparation lab in the southern hemisphere. The museum, perched on top of a spectacular rocky plateau called “The Jump-Up”, captures the fossil fever that has gripped the area since the first bones of gigantic Sauropod “Elliot” were discovered. We then make our way back into Winton for lunch at the ‘Tatts’ Hotel, a local favourite, before taking some time to mix with the locals and visit the opal shops. We finish our day visiting the peculiar Arnos Wall and playing a tune on what is believed to be the world’s only musical fence. GGP
DAY 6. Thursday – Depart Longreach on Spirit of the Outback (B,L,D)
Enjoy breakfast before departing on The Spirit of the Outback. Share stories with your fellow travellers as you journey from Longreach to Brisbane. Overnight Stay: First Class Cabins aboard the Spirit of the Outback.
DAY 7. Friday – Arrive Brisbane (B)
This morning breakfast is served on board before arriving into Brisbane where your journey concludes at 12pm.
