3 Days Birdsville Races and Lake Eyre Tour 2013
Escorted Group Tour from Brisbane or Gold Coast to Birdsville Races and Lake Eyre return
This is a rare opportunity to visit both the iconic Birdsville Races as well as the spectacle of Lake Eyre
At 6.00am we depart from the General Aviation Terminal at Brisbane Airport (please enquire if you wish to board at Coolangatta). It is here you will meet your escort and pilot. After take-off get a great view of the cotton and grain fields around Dalby and watch as the landscape gradually changes to the red mulga country around Charleville. We arrive into Charleville at 8.45am for our first stop and enjoy a cuppa at the Flight Deck Cafe. We then head from Charleville towards the channel country, and watch as this natural irrigation system comes into view. Around noon we arrive at the iconic outback town of Birdsville where you will be transferred to the Birdsville Race Track and Corporate Marquee. Soak up the atmosphere of the 'Melbourne Cup of the Outback', have a punt on the horses and enjoy gourmet food and beverages (included). Just before 5pm we leave the mayhem behind and reboard our plane bound for Marree (1.5 hour flight). The flight to Marree will follow the Diamantina and Warburton Rivers and Goyder Lagoon into Lake Eyre - a very pretty flight as the sun starts to set. Overnight: Marree Hotel (MT,L,D)
After breakfast and a brief look around town, it’s time to board the plane for your flight over the stunning Lake Eyre. We have morning tea at the William Creek Hotel and enjoy time to explore this unique outback pub. William Creek sits in the biggest cattle station in Australia and is the halfway point of the rugged Oodnadatta Track. We reboard our plane at for some more time over Lake Eyre before visiting the Innamincka Hotel for lunch followed by a visit to the famous Dig Tree and learn more about Burke and Wills' ill-fated trek through the heart of this harsh country. Around 3pm we head to Quilpie - ‘Gateway to the Channel Country’. Quilpie is famous for its opals and is also the end of the western railway line. Areas to the west and north are also known to many as ‘Kings in Grass Castles’ country, where famous pioneers such as the Duracks, Costellos and Tullys made their mark on the land. We arrive into Quilpie where you will be transferred to your accommodation. There is time to relax on the verandah of the hotel before dinner and evening entertainment. Overnight: Hotel Quilpie (B,L,D)
After breakfast we take in the sights in and around Quilpie and then reboard for our flight to Charleville. We visit the Cosmos Centre for a tour and lunch before departing back to Brisbane. We arrive around 4.30pm, the end of this once in a lifetime epic journey. (B,L)
