DAY 2: WEDNESDAY – LONGREACH (B,L,D)
Guests on GULF17 will join the tour today after lunch. You will be met by our Outback Aussie Tour’s representative and transferred to our accommodation. Meet fellow travellers at our Welcome Dinner tonight at our accommodation. 2 nights Longreach Motor Inn, Longreach
DAY 3: THURSDAY – LONGREACH (B,L,D)
Today we visit the Qantas Founders Museum to uncover the pioneering aviation stories of our national airline. Explore the five themed galleries at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. Enjoy a relaxing lunch at historic Rosebank Station, as guests of the Smiths. Join the M.V. Explorer for the Drover’s Sunset Cruise, unwind with on-board nibbles and drinks, and witness a magnificent Outback sunset. Take your seat at the award-winning Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show, enjoying a two-course camp oven themed dinner and the live entertainment on the River Stage.
DAY 4: FRIDAY – RICHMOND (B,L,D)
We follow the Matilda Way to Winton in time for morning tea at the newly reopened Waltzing Matilda Centre, then head north-east to Hughenden. Meet Hughie the life-size replica of a Muttaburrasaurus at the Flinders Discovery Centre, then we follow the Overlander Way to Richmond. Overnight Ammonite Inn, Richmond
DAY 5: SATURDAY – MOUNT ISA (B,L,D)
This morning we visit Australia’s premier marine fossil museum, Kronosaurus Korner, for an unforgettable prehistoric adventure. Leaving the marine creatures, we travel on to Julia Creek, home to the endangered Julia Creek Dunnart, an extremely shy nocturnal hunter. In Cloncurry, we will visit John Flynn Place where we will hear the great Australian story of how John Flynn began his Royal Flying Doctor Service, one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world. 2 nights Red Earth Hotel, Mount Isa
DAY 6: SUNDAY – MOUNT ISA (B,L,D)
In Mount Isa, affectionately known as the ‘Oasis of the Outback’, we visit Outback at Isa for a fascinating insight into daily life in the town’s early days. Step back some 30 million years at the Riversleigh Fossil Centre, with its insightful interpretations into early mammal mega fauna development. Tour the perfectly preserved Underground Hospital, built following the bombing of Darwin in WWII, and visit the interesting Beth Anderson Museum.
DAY 7-8: MONDAY-TUESDAY – ADELS GROVE (B,L,D)
A real visual treat awaits us at Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park, one of Queensland’s most scenic national parks with its spectacular gorges and sandstone ranges. View this spectacular gorge system on the ‘Cruise Lawn Hill Gorge’ sightseeing tour. Picnic amongst the towering red pillars steeped in the Aboriginal legend of ‘Boodjamulla’. Delight in the picturesque views overlooking Indarri Falls and Gorge System, or take a refreshing swim in nature’s incredible Tufa rock spa bath. DAY 9-11: WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY – KARUMBA (B,L,D)
Board our scenic flight for spectacular views over Lawn Hill Station, the Gorge and the meandering channels that merge with the incredible Gulf of Carpentaria. Make a stop on remote Sweers Island with its miles of golden beaches, mangroves and rocky cliffs, then reboard our flight to Karumba. Spend a relaxing two days where the ‘Outback meets the sea’ with a mix of organised tours and leisure time. Join a tour of the Barramundi Discovery Centre to learn about the live breeding program; enjoy a casual fish & chip lunch; experience the spectacular Gulf sunset on the informative Croc and Crab Cruise. Cruise the Port of Karumba, estuary and enjoy a special dining highlight – the famous ‘Sand Island, Seafood at Sunset Experience.’ Feast on prawns and crab as the sun sets over the Gulf of Carpentaria. DAY 12-14: SATURDAY-MONDAY – COBBOLD GORGE (B,L,D)
Head to Normanton to see the Big Croc, Purple Pub and the historic Normanton Railway Station, where we board the Gulflander Railmotor or ‘Tin Hair’. Travel across the floodplain of the Norman River to Critters Camp, then reboard our coach to the historic gold mining townships of Croydon and Georgetown. Arrive at the hidden Outback oasis, Cobbold Gorge, our home for the next three nights. Enjoy a three-hour tour of this natural wonder on private land, featuring an optional guided bushwalk to the top of the escarpment. Glide on custom-made, electric powered boats in almost spiritual silence through the dramatic sandstone walled gorge. Join a smoko and station tour briefing followed by a coach tour of the expansive Robin Hood Station. Travel to Forsayth and Einasleigh with time to explore the beautiful Copperfield Gorge, shaped by the Copperfield River as it sliced through molten rock formed from a prehistoric lava flow. Tuck into a country lunch at the Einasleigh Hotel and travel via interesting backtracks to Mount Surprise. Explore the Undara Lava Tubes, part of the world’s longest lava flows from a single volcanic crater. See the beautifully restored, turn of the century, railway carriages at the Undara Resort. DAY 17: THURSDAY – CAIRNS (B,L,D)
Join the iconic Savannahlander at Fossilbrook Creek for a one-hour scenic rail journey.
