DAY 1. Thursday – Arrive Melbourne (D)

Flights arrive at Melbourne Airport to meet one of our signature ‘Gold Class’ coaches. After transferring to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, take time this afternoon to stroll along Southbank on the Yarra River or enjoy some retail therapy in the CBD. Tonight we board one of Melbourne’s elegant colonial tramcars, decorated in the Pullman style of the great trains of Europe. Take in views of the streets of the city, and suburbs such as Prahran, St Kilda, Middle Park and South Melbourne. Enjoy traditional silver and white linen service during your three-course dinner, complimented by fine Australian wines. 1 Night Stay: Crowne Plaza, Melbourne

DAY 2. Friday – Echuca and PS Emmylou Cruise (B,L,D)

We head north this morning to Echuca, the paddle steamer capital of Australia. From the historic Port of Echuca precinct we board the PS Emmylou, a lovingly maintained paddleboat that will take us meandering between the Redgum lined banks of the mighty Murray whilst we enjoy lunch onboard. 1 Night Stay: Madison Spa Resort, Moama

DAY 3. Saturday – Lake Boga, San Hill, Mildura (B,L,D)

Departing Echuca we travel the Murray Valley Highway through Kerang and Lake Boga breaking for morning tea before arriving in Swan Hill. After visiting the Pioneer Settlement for a guided tour and lunch, we continue along passing Tooleybuc then follow the banks of the Murray River to Robinvale. Tonight we bed down in Mildura. 1 Night Stay: Best Western Chaffey International Motor Inn, Mildura

DAY 4. Sunday – Wentworth, Broken Hill (B,L,D)

We cross the Murray River and leave Mildura behind as we make our way to the New South Wales/Victorian border city of Wentworth, the junction of the two mighty rivers, the Darling and the Murray. We visit the historic Wentworth Gaol then enjoy lunch at the Artback Australia Gallery Cafe. This afternoon we traverse the edge of Lake Topiltah and join the Silver City Highway en-route to Broken Hill. 2 Night Stay: Royal Exchange Hotel, Broken Hill . **Please note: Hotel at Broken Hill has stair access only

DAY 5. Monday – Broken Hill (B,L,D)

Enjoy a gossip tour of Broken Hill viewing heritage-listed architecture and discovering the famous art galleries, the Big Picture and the Line of Lode. Next we head to Silverton, almost a ghost town, and the setting for many famous movies. We head back to Broken Hill via the vast Mundi Mundi Plains to visit the Pro Hart Gallery before visiting the Living Desert Flora & Fauna Sanctuary, taking a 2.2km walking trail. We then wait for sunset to witness the ‘Living Desert Sculptures’ nestled amongst the Barrier Ranges. This outlook takes in the magnificent colours of the desert at sunset, along with views of the distant horizon.

DAY 6. Tuesday – Wilcannia, Cobar (B,L,D)

Saying goodbye to Broken Hill we travel the Barrier Highway to Wilcannia, our lunch stop for the day. We then continue on to the town of Cobar, known for its extensive heritage in the mining of copper, lead, silver, zinc and gold. 1 Night Stay: Town & Country Motor Inn, Cobar

DAY 7. Wednesday – PV Jandra paddleboat cruise, Bourke (B,L,D)

Before leaving Cobar we pay a visit to the Great Cobar Heritage Centre which is housed in the former administration building of the Great Cobar Copper Mine. Discover the outstanding collection of exhibits from the early 1870s to the present day before we travel towards historic Bourke. On the outskirts of town, we board the PV Jandra paddleboat for a leisurely cruise along the mighty Darling River learning more about the region’s rich river boat history. 1 Night Stay: Bourke Riverside Motel. **Please note: Accommodation in this country region is very limited and basic. Rooms are en-suited. Star ratings of room types vary. Rooms are allocated at discretion of the motel staff.

DAY 8. Thursday – Lightning Ridge (B,L,D)

We begin our day with by visiting the Back O’ Bourke Information Centre unveiling legends of the back country and this region’s importance in Australian history. We then join a local guide for a gossip tour enjoying an in-depth insight on the town’s history, its isolation, the people who live here and the region’s current status. Our afternoon travels takes us through Walgett to meet the colourful characters of the world’s black opal capital, Lightning Ridge. 2 Night Stay: Wallangulla Motel, Lightning Ridge

DAY 9. Friday – Lightning Ridge (B,MT,L,D)

With our local guide in tow we discover the many hidden gems of this fascinating town. We visit Fred Bodel’s hut, the oldest miner’s camp in the area and the Historic Three Mile Flat, the site of the early miners’ settlement. We travel back to town for morning tea and an opal cutting demonstration. Later we learn about the historic opal mining techniques at Lunatic Hill Open Cut. Next we see the Astronomers’ Monument, the hand built Amigo’s Castle and Bevan’s cactus gardens. After lunch we visit ‘Chambers of the Black Hand’ a national treasure in the making in a 100 year old mine shaft. You will see images carved and painted in the sandstone walls and pillars. After a day of sightseeing we take a therapeutic soak in the naturally heated thermal baths.

DAY 10. Saturday – St George, Roma (B,L,D)

Leaving Lightning Ridge and its colourful characters behind us, we travel north past Lake Coocoran and Dirranbandi we make our way to St George to enjoy lunch at Riversands Winery. Later we arrive in Roma in the western Darling Downs, the centre of a rich pastoral and wheat-growing district. 1 Night Stay: Explorers Inn, Roma

DAY 11. Sunday – Toowoomba, Arrive Brisbane (B,L)

On our final day we travel through Chinchilla and Dalby as we make our way to Toowoomba. We break for lunch and take time to admire the stunning views from Picnic Point before descending the Great Diving Range and passing through the Lockyer Valley as we make our way to Roma Street in central Brisbane.
