This morning after breakfast we will transfer from Karumba to Normanton Railway Station. Take a journey aboard the legendary Gulflander for a rail journey unlike any other. Also known as the ‘Tin Hare’, this legendary rail motor is one of the last great characters of the rail world. From wetlands and grasslands to arid Savannah territory, the Gulflander travels through countryside that most people will never see. This nostalgic rail journey is the perfect way to discover an area steeped in pioneering history and heritage. Normanton was the port for the Croydon Gold Rush as is a terminus of the Normanton Railway Station which features preserved Victorian architecture. On our ride, enjoy a stop at Blackbull Siding for morning tea, before arriving into Croydon. We board the coach again for our travel to Forsayth and onto to Cobbold Gorge. Overnight Cobbold Gorge Village / Finnegan’s Rest, Forsayth (B,D)

Day 6. Thursday – Cobbold Gorge Cruise

Following breakfast this morning you will be amazed as you delve into a geological process which began some 1700 million years ago. This is an unforgettable highlight of your trip to outback Queensland. Our tour begins with an informative insight to the geology of the rugged sandstone formations, followed by a guided bushwalk to the top of the escarpment. It’s a relatively easy walk with the reward of a magnificent view of the gorge below. Then glide on custom-made, electric powered boats in almost eerie silence ensuring minimal disturbance to the wildlife. There’s every chance of seeing one of the large population of resident freshwater crocodiles. Return to our accommodation this afternoon with time to freshen up before dinner this evening. Overnight Cobbold Gorge Village / Finnegan’s Rest, Forsayth (B,D)

Day 7. Friday – Savannahlander to Mt Surprise

The Savannahlander is a classic 1960 Rail Motor which travels between Cairns and Forsayth return, giving passengers one of the great rail experiences of the world through the savannah of outback Australia. “The Silver Bullet” as the train is affectionately known, was state-of-the-art when it was brought into service. Now it reflects the pace and grace of a by-gone era, while at the same time offering a unique experience to people adventurous enough to make the journey. Following breakfast we will transfer to meet the Savannahlander from Forsayth stopping at Einasleigh with time to purchase lunch at the pub if you wish and before travelling through to Mount Surprise. We then depart for Undara Lava Lodge. On the western slopes of the McBride Plateau, open woodlands give way to the vast open spaces of the savannah. Here in Undara Volcanic National Park, rich volcanic basalt soils, covered in a sea of seasonal grasses, conceal the Undara lava tube. This geological tunnel of global significance extends under a ribbon of remnant dry rainforest. ‘Undara’ is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘long way’. The park protects one of the longest lava tube cave systems in the world. This afternoon we join the Archway Explorer Tour for a two hour guide through the Lava Tubes. This is an excellent overview of the lava tubes and how they were formed. Your Savannah Guide will also point out other interesting environmental, geological and historical features on your trip to and from the lava tubes. Following the tour we check into our accommodation before enjoying dinner by the campfire. Overnight at Undara Lava Lodge (B,D)
