South Australia Tour, Wilpena Pound, ArkaroolaSouth Australia Tour, Adelaide Tours, Barossa Valley Tours

Day 1. Glenelg

Our tour will commence at 6pm in Glenelg, Adelaide’s historic beachside suburb. Located 7 kilometres from Adelaide Airport, 8 kilometres from Keswick Railway Terminal (interstate trains) and a 20-minute tram ride away from Adelaide City (10 kilometres). Your accommodation is an easy walk to the beach, jetty, Bay to City Tram, cafes and restaurants. At 6pm – Graham & Deb would like to invite you to join them for a pre-dinner drink and nibbles by the pool, followed by a 2-course dinner in Quattro Café, next to your motel. Accommodation: Comfort Inn Haven Marina (D)

Day 2. Adelaide to Burra

After breakfast we’ll depart our motel and travel north out of Adelaide and head to the quaint town of Burra with a little surprise along the way!! Burra is a fascinating little town that began with the discovery of copper in 1845. We will have a guided tour of Burra before you’ll have free time to explore all the antique shops and befitting a copper town, Burra has a collection of pubs as well as a number of coffee shops and cafes and other interesting little bits. Accommodation: Burra Motor Inn (CBLD)

Day 3. Burra to Hawker

Today we’ll head north dropping into historical Terowie, Peterborough and Orroroo enroute to Hawker. Once a thriving railway town, Hawker retains much of its 1880s charm in heritage buildings. Whilst in Hawker, marvel at the acclaimed 30-metre Wilpena Panorama in the Jeff Morgan’s Gallery. Accommodation: The Outback Motel, Hawker(CBLD)

Day 4. Hawker to Arkaroola

Departing Hawker we’ll head north to the one of the Old Ghan Railway stops at Parachilna. A look through this unique tiny town before we travel alongside the original Old Ghan Railway line where there are many remnants of old railway stations, bridges across creeks and straight stretches where the railway used to run, before arriving at Beltana Station for a tour and lunch. Our hosts, Laura & Graham will show us around and you’ll hear the fascinating history of the township, surveyed in 1873. Also hear about Thomas Elder who introduced camels to the Flinders Ranges in 1866. Leaving Beltana, we’ll travel past the township of Leigh Creek, where coal is transported south to Port Augusta on the longest coal train in Australia, for use as fuel to generate about 40% of SA’s electricity requirements. The final leg of today’s journey is via Copely to Arkaroola. Accommodation: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary (CBLD)

Day 5. Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

In the 1960’s Reg and Griselda Sprigg brought a 610 sq km sheep property in the Northern Flinders Ranges and dedicated their lives to returning the land to its natural state. The result is the world renowned Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, featuring some of the most spectacular views in the country, some of which you will see today whilst on your half day Ridgetop Tour – a great highlight of your trip to the Flinders!! Enjoy some free time this afternoon to explore and perhaps see some of the
160 species of birds and fauna in the area. Accommodation: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary (CBLD)

Day 6. Arkaroola to Wilpena Pound

Departing Arkaroola, we’ll travel to the old copper town of Blinman for a mine tour. Copper was first discovered in the area in 1859 and in the following decades thousands of tonnes of copper ore were removed and hundreds of people rolled into Blinman. Today it is a quiet little town that celebrates its mining heritage with the mine now a most interesting heritage reserve. Maybe drop into the pub, which was founded in 1869 before lunch at the Wild Lime Café. Following lunch we’ll head to Wilpena Pound
with a stop at Stokes Lookout. Accommodation: Wilpena Pound Resort (CBLD)

Day 7. Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound is a majestic natural amphitheatre and the centerpiece of the Flinders Ranges National Park. A lost world located inside a giant stone crater, with its majestic red ramparts measuring eight by 17 kilometres and protecting its 9,000 ha base. A vast array of flora and fauna make it a small paradise on earth for bush walkers and birdwatchers. Whilst we are here we’ll enjoy a scenic flight over the Pound, hear about its history and there will be time to enjoy walks into and around the Pound. Accommodation: Wilpena Pound Resort (CBLD)

Day 8. Clare to Wilpena Pound

Departing Wilpena Pound we’ll travel south through Hawker and via Quorn and Wilmington to Melrose, nestled at the foot of Mount Remarkable and the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. We will enjoy lunch at the North Star Hotel, the oldest pub in the Flinders opening in 1854 and you will have time to stroll down the main street of this quaint little town. After some time in Melrose we’ll head onto Laura – the boyhood home of poet C J Dennis and then to Gladstone to visit Trend Drinks, the last small soft
drink manufacturer in SA, where they will tempt us with their unique Sparkling Honey and Sparkling Ginger drinks. Travel through the tiny township of Georgetown before arriving at our overnight stop in Clare. Accommodation: Clare Central Motel (CBLD)

Day 9. Clare to the Barossa Valley

A visit to the Clare Valley would not be complete without dropping into the oldest winery and vineyard in Clare Valley - Sevenhill Cellars - perhaps one of the most picturesque and unusual wineries in the country. At its heart is the magnificent St Aloysius Church (with crypt), through which visitors are free to wander. The winery has been owned and operated by Jesuits since 1851, and it still produces sacramental wines used across Australia and in parts of Asia. Renowned vigneron Brother John May may be around to chat to us about the history of this very special place. From here we travel onto the world famous Barossa Valley with its Bavarian villages, baroque Italianate Chateaux and stunning
vineyards. Our first stop is at Seppeltsfield Winery for a guided tour of this very historic winery, lunch and tasting. Then we are off into Tanunda via Richmond Grove Winery.   Accommodation: Barossa Motor Lodge, Tanunda (CBLD)

Day 10. Barossa Valley

Following breakfast, our day will begin with a tour of Tanunda, a visit to Mengler Hill Lookout, some time in the little township of Angaston, probably most famous for its dried fruits and nuts and wine tasting at some of the most well known wineries in the region. You will also have some free time this afternoon to stroll through the township of Tanunda before dinner this evening at the motel. Accommodation: Barossa Motor Lodge, Tanunda (CBLD)

Day 11. Barossa Valley to Adelaide

A highlight of our visit to the Barossa will be a helicopter flight over Rowland Flat, home of the famous Jacobs Creek, back over Lyndoch and onto the Whispering Wall, incorporating unsurpassed views of the picturesque valley floor. Following our helicopter ride we will travel through Williamstown prior to smoko at the Whispering Wall. Continuing on, we will reach the historic village of Hahndorf. After plenty of free time for lunch and a look around we will head back to Glenelg to enjoy our last evening
together with dinner in Quattro Café. Accommodation: Comfort Inn Haven Marina (CBLD)

Day 12. Farewell

Following a hearty breakfast in Quattro Café we will bid you farewell as you head off on your next adventure. Safe travels. (B)
