Fully Escorted Coach Tour from Mackay to Uralla & Toowoomba return

Follow the footsteps of John Mackay, in style as we learn the history of how Mackay came to be. This escorted tour will take in the highlights of the Mid North Coast before travelling up to Uralla to start the trip home taking in history and culture of the various towns that we pass through. Exerts from John Mackay’s diary will be recited in corresponding towns.

Day 1. Thu 13 May: Mackay to Brisbane & Nambucca Heads

Departing Mackay by air where you will be met at Brisbane Airport by your host Col Adamson. We will travel on to the Gold Coast for lunch before we head down the coast to New Italy for a leg stretch. Our destination is Nambucca Heads. Day 2. Fri 14 May: Macksville, Nambucca Heads

After breakfast we head out to the nut factory for macadamia delights and a look at the farm. Morning tea in Macksville by the river before departing for the 'Pub With No Beer' for lunch. This is where Slim Dusty song was written. Trip through Nambucca Valley to township Bowraville to tour the museum. This town, in its hey day was sawmill and butter factory town. From here we travel back to accommodation to freshen up to go to the Star Hotel for dinner in the upstairs dining room over looking the Nambucca River. Overnight: Nambucca Heads (BLD)

Day 3. Sat 15 May: Bellingen, Dorrigo, Nambucca Heads

This morning we journey north to little country town of Bellingen and markets in The Old Yellow Shed once a butter factory. After morning tea we head to the top of the Dorrigo National Park for a walk through the canopy of this ancient hardwood rainforest. Dorrigo was a timber, potato and dairy area. Lunch will be at the Dorrigo Hotel, better known as the Top Pub.  Before we leave this plateau town we will check out the huge railway museum that covers many acres including old steam trains and carriages etc. We have dinner at the Jaaning Tree Restaurant on the waterfront at Nambucca Heads. Day 4. Sun 16 May: Kempsey, Port Macquarie

Departing Nambucca we head through Seaside Villages of Scotts Head, Stuarts Point and to South West Rocks for morning tea and to Trial Bay Gaol. Lunch is in Kempsey on our way to Cassagranis Winery for a tour and tasting before going to our accommodation in Port Macquarie. Overnight: Port Macquarie (BLD)

Day 5. Mon 17 May: Wauchope, Uralla

This morning we tour and have morning tea at historic Port Macquarie before leaving for Wauchope where we visit Timber Town, a reconstruction of an old timber village. After lunch we head back up Great Dividing Range, stopping at Aspley Falls, before arriving at our accommodation in Uralla. Overnight: Uralla (BLD)

Day 6. Tue 18 May: Armidale, Glen Innes

This morning we tour the local cemetery where there is a memorial for the John Mackay expedition, McCrossin Museum and then on to the brass and iron factory before we have lunch at the Thunderbolt Inn. A scenic drive through passed the old Gostwyck Chapel and wool sheds. We’ll do a city tour when we arrive in Armidale before we call it a night in Glen Innes. Overnight: Glen Innes (BLD)

Day 7. Wed 19 May: Tenterfield, Stanthorpe, Warwick, Toowoomba

We leave Glen Innes and visit the Australian Standing Stones, a Stonehenge structure. We travel onto Tenterfield Saddler and Rail Siding for a historic tour of the town which was made famous by Peter Allen’s song. Lunch will be had at the Royal Hotel in Tenterfield as we travel on through Stanthorpe and Warwick. Accommodation will be in Toowoomba. Overnight: Toowoomba (BLD)

Day 8. Thu 20 May: Toowoomba

This morning we drive a city tour of Toowoomba and the Cobb and Co Museum before heading out to Jodaryan Wool Shed for billy tea and damper. We then drive on through Dalby to Jimbour Homestead and Winery for a tour of this magnificent old mansion, tasting and lunch. From here we head to Gayndah for our accommodation. Overnight: Gayndah (BLD)

Day 9. Fri 21 May: Gladstone, Rockhampton

Our first visit this morning will be to the Gayndah Museum before we head across the range to Mount Perry Federal Inn for lunch. After Lunch we will drive through the old Railway Tunnel. We head to Gladstone for an afternoon tea stop then on to Rockhampton for our accommodation. Overnight: Rockhampton (BLD)

Day 10. Sat 22 May: Broken River

Tour of the city before we head into the Botanic Gardens for morning tea then off to Marlborough Hotel for lunch. We then head west to the top of the range. (It is at this part of the journey that Mackay & McCrossin headed towards Charters Towers area before turning back towards the coast) to Broken River for the night. Overnight: Broken River (BLD)

Day 11. Sun 23 May: Arrive Mackay

After Platypus Spotting and breakfast at Broken Rover, we make our way down the hill to Dumbleton Weir where morning tea will be served before heading into Mackay for lunch and finish our journey on the day, 150 years before, that Mackay was discovered.
